About Taxidermy Hobbyist

Why this site exists and who's behind it.

Why this site exists

Taxidermy is one of the oldest crafts in human history, a blend of art, anatomy, and patience. But for most people approaching it for the first time, whether as a hunter wanting to preserve a trophy, a pet owner facing a hard decision, or a hobbyist curious about the craft, finding clear, honest information is harder than it should be.

Pricing is opaque. Quality varies wildly between studios. The legal landscape around birds and exotic species is a maze. And the difference between a $400 mount and a $2,500 mount isn't obvious until you've already paid.

We started Taxidermy Hobbyist to fix that.

What we publish

We write in-depth, regularly-updated guides on the questions hunters and hobbyists actually ask:

  • Real cost breakdowns by animal type, mount style, and region.
  • How to evaluate a taxidermist before you hand over your trophy.
  • The legal rules around game birds, raptors, and protected species.
  • Beginner-friendly roadmaps for people who want to learn the craft themselves.
  • Reviews and recommendations of tools, supplies, and schools.

Every guide is reviewed by someone with hands-on knowledge in the field, and we update them as pricing, regulations, and best practices evolve. When we get something wrong, we fix it and note the change. Read more about how we work in our editorial standards.

The directory

We're building a nationwide directory of taxidermists, searchable by state, specialty, and price tier, so you don't have to start from a Google search and a stack of Yelp reviews of varying credibility.

Listings are free for taxidermists. We verify business information directly with each studio before publishing. If you're a taxidermist and want to be listed, submit your business here.

Who we are

Taxidermy Hobbyist is operated by Scepter Marketing LLC, a Michigan-based company. The site is run by a small team of writers, hunters, and craftspeople who care about the field and want to make it more accessible to newcomers without dumbing it down for professionals.

We're not a hobbyist forum, and we're not a vendor storefront pretending to be a guide. We're an independent publisher. We support the site through display advertising, affiliate links to retailers like Amazon and McKenzie Taxidermy Supply, and optional featured directory placements. None of those relationships influence what we publish or how we rank taxidermists in the directory. See our editorial standards for the details.
